Asana in Yoga

Asana or yoga position's or posture's, are the main interest for beginner's. Asana's are used for healing the body, bringing body to normal state of health from damages done over the time, or to prepare body for healthy continuous state or prevention of health related problem's.

There are thousands of yogic postures. Though all can be used in all kind of yoga, but some system have been used to practice these in all system's of yoga. For example Ashtanga has set of series, Hatha has same and so on in all kind of yoga.

One has to keep in mind that yoga postures are not just excercises, they are very complicated, even though some may look easy. This is reason that these should always be practiced under the suprivision and guidence of experienced yoga teacher to avoid injuries or unwanted effects.

The reason i say they are complicated is because there is so much more involved, like breathing, movement of certain body part on inhale or exhale, alignment of body, gaze and concentration etc. A beginner or even little experienced can not fully look after all these aspects, this is reason they are practiced with experienced teacher.

Yoga posture's are drawn from life and animals and from natural shapes occuring in nature. Many of this is explained in name of posture itself. For example "Brikhsasana" , where Brikksa is word for tree, so meaning tree pose. All the posture's are given name in sanskrit. If one can understand sanskrit, is easy to understand then what posture is about.

Alignment in posture is extremely important. This is reason one need to have concentration on posture to achieve it. One can be doing posture working on chest, but forgets to align back in it, then posture will either work somewhere else or without proper benefit. For this purpose Mysore classes i feel are best designed, as there teacher physically aligns body of practitioner.

The movement of body is controlled by drishti, or gaze. One needs to remember gazing points in posture's. This not only moves body in right direction but also helps achieving concentration and control of mind. Posture's are just to heal body and prepare for meditation, once healing done, practitioner moves on to next stages.

Concentration on the posture is something which is mastered over the time. This is one could say baby step towards the bigger goal of yoga, which is controlling mind. As mentioned in first yoga sutra of Patanjali, "Yogash citta vrtti nirodah" , meaning yoga happens when mechanisms, vibrations and agitation of mind waves dissolve. Once practitioner starts concentrating on postures and then on breathing, one starts to increase concentration and control mind. When this is combined with sythmic posture movement, one moved towards higher level of meditation and starts to see himself in truth. This inturn relieves one from problems like anxiety, stress etc.
