Yoga and food

Yoga and food have been another big interest in light from decades, especially in western countries. There are endless websites and blogs putting lot of information regarding this.

It is to be understood first that there are basic rules that we follow, they are
- Keep at least 4 hrs gap inbetween practice and food.
- In morning practice, always practice empty stomach.
- No water or any liquid should be consumed during practice.

The reason we keep stomach empty is to be able to apply Ujjayi breathing and Bhandas ( Internal locks ). With full stomach there is good chance that one can feel nausea or even throw up.

Water should be avoided during practice because we are trying to heat up body from inside, and drinking water can change that, so one should avoid water unless you are advised to have it by doctor or teacher.

Now a days it is lot of stress among yoga practitioners to go for raw food or organic. I agree with this to some extent. I say some extent because of valid reasons, one because organic is expansive and not everyone can afford it and raw i do not think is always healthy. So one has to make balance in judgement regarding what they choose to eat.

In older times in India, food was pure and the methods used to cultivate were traditional. There was no use of fertilizers or pesticides, so one could say that was pure organic. Now a days all over the world use of all the new methods and genetically engineered food is may be different from that time. So eating that raw i would not auggest, unless it is fruit.

Keeping the balance of proteins and vitamins and other essential nutrients in food intake is very important while practicing yoga. If you are avoiding meat, increasing protein diet through lentils or similar foods becomes necessary. Dieting and yoga do not always go well together. If one is trying to lose weigth with yoga, practicing regularily will bring that. I do not mean to say that keep eating unhealthy food, i mean eat balanced healthy food. Lets keep it till here, more in next posts :).
